Tracing the roots of your family tree can be a fun and very rewarding experience. Imagine finding out that your ancestors came to America on the Mayflower. Or that you are related to English royalty. Uncovering these facts can be painstaking and take years, but it is worth it in the end.
First, you will want to contact living relatives to get as much information from them as possible. You will also want to find out if someone has already started uncovering some of the secrets to your families history. This will make it easier to get through the first few generations. You will want to get key dates to record for each family member. Such as birth date, date of death, and date of marriage and divorce.
There are many websites and software programs that help you keep track of your information. These same programs and websites also allow you to search records based on names and dates to find out more information about your heritage. You are able to search through records and newspaper articles dating back to the 1700′s.
Other ways to get information are from gravestones. These will help to fill in information on possible birth dates, date of death, and possibly even spouses and children. You will also want to think about adding photographs to your family tree. Using the software or the websites, you can add as many people as you want and as much information about them that you have.
