Times are tough, but successful money management means going beyond thoughts of scarcity. Families on a budget can still have loads of fun by thinking outside the box. Here are some tips to get you going:

  • Spend only what you have. That means you might have to save up for that trip to the Grand Canyon. A prepaid debit card is great because you can place the money you have saved on the card. Then, when you take that trip, the money is there for your use, and you don’t have to carry cash.
  • Think of ways to have fun that cost you less. When was the last time you attended an outdoor concert or had fun swimming at the neighborhood pool? Taking a hike in the mountains or walking along the beach are great ways to spend the day.
  • Don’t be afraid to save. With saving comes opportunity for fun without having to think later about the debt accumulated from the experience.
  • Do some trading. What services can you offer another family in exchange for something your family wants to do? Does your neighbor have a boat? Ask about trading a day with your four wheeler for a day on their boat.

Saving money means you might have to think more creatively, but in the end you’ll find yourself not missing much of what you used to consider the “grand” vacationing experience. You may even find that the simple things in life give your family more pleasure and longer lasting memories.
