Families have history, and as the famous saying goes, history repeats itself. This saying often comes true in cases of family. You may ask how? Well, first there is the issue of genetics. A person inherits a lot from his or her ancestors through their genes. Facial features, body structure and even a person’s character is many a times said to resemble some past relative or the other. You also inherit several ‘family’ ailments through your genes like diabetes, hypertension, heart ailments, and many more. Traits inherited through your genes are not in your control and there is seldom anything that you can do about it.
However, there are also several habits that can ‘run in the family.’ It is a fact that children tend to imitate their parents. This is why family counselors advise parents to put on their best behavior in front of their kids. Swearing and using bad language should be avoided as children pick these up very quickly. It is also known that children born into families with a history of substance abuse are more likely to become addicts themselves. Being brought up by alcoholic parents often leads a child to believe that consuming large quantities of alcohol regularly is normal. The same applies to illegal drug abuse.
Other habits such as gambling can also be passed from parents to their children. Kids see their parents betting money on sports or play casino games and soon enough try their hand at it too. Modern day kids have access to cash and have the option of playing online casino games. This can lead to a gambling habit developing undetected by parents. While gambling can be fun and thrilling if done in a controlled environment, parents should ensure that it does not become an addiction for them, as well as their children, as this can lead to financial trouble in the future.
